Everyone Loves Magic

Inzos being sucked into a mirror in Sparkle Valley

Inzos

Inzos are scary winged creatures who move like thick black smoke and have sharp claws and teeth. They can sense fear and try to put out the "inner spark" of anyone they come across. Emily first saw them in her dreams, where she was being chased by them through a dark forest. But she soon learned something important: they were only as strong as she let them be.

Throughout the series, Inzos remind us of how powerful fear can be and why it’s important to face it. They aren’t truly bad and can be controlled by those who believe in themselves. Overcoming the Inzos is a big part of Emily’s journey as she grows up.

A green fog representing IT (or the Beast) in Sparkle Valley

IT is a mysterious force hiding beneath Sparkle Valley. You can’t see IT, but it sounds like a pit of hissing snakes. When IT shows up, thick green mist and tremors follow. Known as "The Beast," IT represents the scary side of growing up—it tries to crush imagination and replace it with only logic and reason. It’s like a computer virus, targeting Abigail to make Emily “grow up” and leave her imagination behind.

IT (The Beast)

The Smortzle about to cast a spell with the Cane in Sparkle Valley

The Cane

The Cane, with its magical sapphire handle holding the essence of Frank Needlenose, is a powerful object in Sparkle Valley. In Book 1, Ivana uses its power to capture “inner sparks” and change the Valley. In Book 2, the tricky Smortzle takes control of the Cane and uses its magic for himself. But in Book 3, Abigail finds a special Powder of Life hidden in the gemstone and brings Frank Needlenose back to help save the Valley.

Both the Cane and the Locket come from Emily’s imagination and hold magic, but they’re very different. The Cane is more like a tool for control, while the Locket is like love—it connects people and has the power to change hearts.

The Locket

The Locket is a special and magical gift from Emily to Abigail on their birthday. It's packed with the power of imagination, especially the magic of sisterly love that made Abigail "real." Their bond is so strong that it reshapes their reality, making them true sisters. That's why IT wants to destroy the locket. That's also why IT went after Ivana in Book 1. Driven by jealousy, Ivana wanted the locket to shatter Abigail's reality. But Abigail won't let that happen; she'll protect her magical locket no matter what.

Abigail reaches for the Powder of Life

The Powder of Life

The Powder of Life is an amazing substance with the power to make anything real! It’s kept in an orange sachet and was created by the Needlenose twins in Sparkle Valley. But the recipe was lost in a fire, making it one-of-a-kind. The Powder of Life gives Abigail control over her future and who she wants to be. She could become a real girl, but she decides not to, realizing that she and Emily each have their own worlds to belong to. The Powder of Life shows the importance of making choices and having the power to shape our own paths.

The Journal

When Doris was a young girl, she was fascinated by Frank Needlenose and his magical world of research. He gave her a special purple journal to write down all her adventures in Sparkle Valley. Doris took this job seriously, filling the journal with her discoveries about IT, “thin places,” and her adventures with the twins. In Book 2, Emily inherits the journal, and Abigail takes it back to the Valley. That’s when something incredible happens—the journal reveals a hidden history of Sparkle Valley, full of secrets and stories Doris had recorded over the years. With this new knowledge, Abigail learns just how important Doris was in protecting Sparkle Valley from IT’s darkness.

Abigail and Frank Needlenose are held aloft by swarms of blue butterflies

Blue Flowers (& Butterflies)

The "Blue Flower," represented by Abigail, stands for goodness and the special "inner spark" that all kids have. IT wants to put out this spark, but it keeps shining throughout the story. You’ll see this spark as blue forget-me-nots blooming in the Magic Garden when Emily tells her stories, or as a beautiful butterfly guiding Abigail to Grandma Doris's imagination. When powered by pure imagination, these flowers become unbreakable glowing butterflies that fly off to protect Sparkle Valley—Emily's inner spark—from darkness.

Most people lose sight of the Blue Flower as they grow up, but a few, like Emily and Doris, can still see it, keeping their youthful spirit alive in the middle of everyday life.
